Jiaxing, located in Zhejiang Province, has been a land of honey and milk since ancient times. How to dispose straw properly has been an important issue in Jiaxing since it produces the largest amount of straw in Zhejiang Province. And Xiuzhou District is the main straw-producing area with an annual output of about 210,000 tons of straw. So the social practice team selected two representative towns of Xiuzhou District, namely, Youchegang Town and Xinteng Town. On July 25, 2016, the team visited these two towns, investigating and learning from their experiences in straw disposal.

We went to the Service Center in Youchegang Town and had a talk with Mr. Wu. He said the cornstalk cannot just be burnt, but have to find a way to utilize properly. The neighboring towns near Youchegang use the cornstalk to grow mushroom, and some farmers use the straw to fertilize their crops. So the hardest part is that if the straw cannot be used by power plant, it has no other better way.  

And in the afternoon, we visited Xinteng Town. As a large agricultural town with 125,000 acres of land. Disposing the straw scientifically has become an urgent problem. The local government has introduced favorable polices to help farmers. Mr. Zhou said the implementation of the policies can dispose part of the straw but it is not the best way that can satisfy everyone. For straw disposal, we still have a long way to go.    

In the end, staff of Xinteng Agricultural Service Center helped us to finish the questionnaires which put an end to the social practice.
